Moving On Doesn’t Mean Letting Go: A Modern Guide to Navigating Loss
by Gina Moffa, LCSW

Did you know that grief can come with more than just death losses? Would you believe it if we said that you have grieved a lot in your lifetime, maybe without really knowing?

Grief is the result of any kind of loss --- a full-body experience that follows losing something of significance. But grief can also accompany us on our journey of healing disordered eating, or through sobriety. Our loss of identity or safety, our loss of friendships and support systems. Change in and of itself is grief a good portion of the time.

We grieve when we lose close relationships, or end certain stages of life, we even can grieve positive life events, because it can also mean loss of the familiar or comforting parts of our life.

I talk with my clients about loss all the time. Some clients are struggling with children going to college or moving out. Others are struggling with the loss of a relationship or their sense of identity during a separation.

These losses also come up in my therapy group for women aged 50 and older who are struggling with eating disorders. So often, one’s sense of self becomes wrapped up in the disorder. While it is ultimately healing to recover from an eating disorder, the process can absolutely challenge your sense of self and trigger feelings of grief.

Grief is a prevalent mental health burden people are carrying, and with this fast-paced lifestyle, it's no wonder we didn't stop to really tend to our experiences of loss. If you think about it right now, what losses have you endured that you didn't realize you might be grieving?

My friend and colleague, Gina Moffa, LCSW, has written a beautiful new book that touches upon all of these different losses and also, helps us navigate our way through them.

As a grief and trauma therapist in New York City, Gina opens up about her own story of multiple losses, brings in her clients' stories and adds powerful reflections, exercises and tools.

With wisdom and sincere caring, Gina brings comfort, direction, and gentle nudging to look deeper at our lives, our losses, and what lies ahead. I couldn't recommend this book more for anyone navigating loss right now. Her book is on shelves around the world on August 22nd,  and I am happy to be sharing it here with you.

Get to know Gina a little better and order your copy of the book here.
